Ali Moughnieh

Is a Sydney based photographer, best known for his insect mugshots.
Ali comes from a Lebanese background, he was born and brought up in Kuwait, and has been calling Sydney his home since 2015.
With an engineering background, Ali is methodical and has a keen eye for details, this allows him to implement his own methods and techniques to photograph the insects .

How does he take his photos

Ali uses a technique called “focus stacking”, in which multiple shots are taken at incremental steps to cover all the focal planes of the subject. This means that each photo consists of up to 250 images.
To ensure that the images are of the highest quality possible, Ali spends between 4 to 25 hours working on each image before it’s ready to be printed.

Printing

We offer two kinds of paper, Fuji Crystal Achive Digital Pearl, and Hahnemühle Photo Rag® Bright White. Each one has different characteristics;

Fuji Pearl (printed on high-speed 50-inch wide Durst Lambda printer, and processed through Kreonite RA-4 chemical processor): High- gloss with iridescent, pearl-like effect, vibrant colour reproduction, deep blacks and purer highlights. Can be framed and can be mounted on Acrylic.

Hahnemühle Fine Art (printed on 10-ink Epson Stylus Pro 9900, 44” printer): 310 gsm, 100% cotton, bright white, Matt premium inkjet coating. Boasts vivid colours and deep blacks. Perfect choice if you want to achieve a Matt feeling without light reflection. Cannot be mounted on Acrylic.
